My mother cooked for the whole block before she ever had a restaurant.

Graciela (everybody calls her Chela) came to Kansas City from Michoacán and opened this taqueria on Southwest Boulevard with my dad.

Now my brother Tomás runs the kitchen with her and I run the front.

What hasn’t changed

  • We still press the tortillas by hand every morning.
  • The al pastor still turns on the trompo in the window.
  • The salsas are still hers.

The corner table

Kids do their homework at the corner table after school. People come for lunch from the offices downtown and come back on the weekend with the whole family for pozole.
